HOT FOR HAIR: Pastel Hues

Manic Panic hair is about as hard-core as pop punk and the sullen, suburban teenyboppers who love it (we've all gone through that phase). The new statement hair colors, with roots across the Atlantic and glowing reviews from taste-making blogs like The Sartorialist and IntoTheGloss, are the much-lovelier (and more wearable) pastels. Cherylann Esposito of Shag (840 Summer Street, South Boston, 617.268.2500) has clients leaving the salon with hair in shades of periwinkle, lilac, silver, and light pink. The results are equal parts whimsy and edge. But these tints do require more upkeep than some hair colors - usually a redo is needed every four to six weeks. For super-temporary streaks, stylist Naz Kupelian of Naz Kupelian Salon (311 Woburn Street, Lexington, 781.676.7791) recommends treating small portions of hair with priming cream and adding color with loose eye-shadow. The shadow sticks to the priming cream, creating a pop that comes out with one wash - perfect for color commitment-phobes. Still too outré for you? These hues (mint and lilac, especially) are hot for nails, too.
