Meet the Mayor: Drink

Welcome to "Meet the Mayor," a segment in which we interview local Foursquare Mayors in their natural habitats.

Drink
Graham Wright

EXPLAIN WHAT YOU ORDERED!
I asked for a hot toddy. Here, they don’t have a cocktail list. They kind of improv things. So I didn’t ask for anything specific, just the style. She [the bartender] threw out an idea she’d done recently in that genre, and it sounded good. Sometimes you can give them specific ideas, like, something with rum, or something blue. I heard someone say “Make me a drink to match my dress” once.

WHY ARE YOU THE MAYOR?
Well, it’s handy that I live two blocks away, but I love the philosophy and the vibe. My two lives are basically science and art. I’m a part-time opera singer, and I work at the Museum of Science. Here, there’s a combination of analytical, methodical experimentation with the same approach to art and craft that opera singers and musicians have. They’re taking things that are hundreds of years old and not just re-creating them for accuracy’s sake but giving them a contemporary context and finding something new about them.

WHY DID I THINK YOU PLAYED SAXOPHONE?
Maybe I said I looked like Kevin Youkilis, then you thought “Sox,” then thought “sax,” and transferred it to me?

THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED!
