My impending departure

A little more than a week ago, I told the Phoenix that I was leaving to take an associate producer job at WGBH’s Greater Boston, where I’ve been a frequent guest panelist. The news has now been announced at the paper, so I wanted to mention it here as well, even though I’ll be writing through March 10.

While I’m excited about heading to WGBH and taking part in the big changes unfolding over there, leaving the Phoenix is bittersweet. I’ve been here for six and a half years, and have been fortunate enough to do two jobs--writing the Talking Politics and Don’t Quote Me columns and their accompanying blogs--that I truly believe are among the very best in Boston journalism.

I’ll be saying a more formal farewell next month. In the interim, though, thanks to all of you who’ve read this blog and my columns in the old-school, hard-copy Phoenix. I’ve been grateful for your attention, insights and passion--even when that passion takes the form of vigorous disagreement.

And finally, I’m not gone yet--so please keep the tips and comments coming.

Adam, though we've rarely agreed, I offer my sincere best wishes on your new venture. That said, I'm not sure the Greater Boston franchise can survive yet another ultra-liberal.

Doyenne Emily Rooney has been absolutely brutal in recent months, from her fawning over Menino in the fall election to helping finish bumbling Bill Delahunt's sentences last week. Perhaps most bizarre was this quip right around the special election in January, "Scott Brown has never really been vetted by the press, not the local and not the national. You never know what the national press will come up with if they start investigating Brown." Then there was her feigned indignation two nights in a row about a vacation photo of Sen. Brown's daughter's in bikini tops. Oh, the humanity!

I realize 2 is a non-profit station and the subsidies will pour in regardless, but a little balance would go a long way. When Joe Sciacca is the token "conservative" on Friday nights, it's hard to take the program seriously anymore. You have your work cut out for you.

Say it ain't so Adam! You've been an "a fair and balanced" voice for analyzing the media's shortcomings and strengths, and part of long and honorable tradition of "Dont Quote Me" critics, which has included the late Dave O'Brien, Mark Jurkowitz and Dan Kennedy.

In some ways, it's a thankless but vital job. I only hope that Steve Mindich will see fit to continue the "Dont Quote Me" column.

With the Globe doing away with its media writer and ombudsmen positions, leaving only Dan Kennedy's Media Nation blog and Emily Rooney's" delightful "Beat the Press," we are all the poorer for the dearth of critical voices in this once-great media town.
