WGBH's hard sell
As a media columnist and occasional classical-music listener, I'm intrigued by WGBH's newly announced purchase of WCRB--apparently for the not-insubstantial sum of $14 million.
I was struck, though, by the Globe's description of how WGBH plans to pay for its $14 million acquisition. Writes Megan Woolhouse:
WGBH said it will finance the purchase by beginning a capital campaign donation drive called Keep Classical Alive.
That seems like a risky proposition, especially since neither WGBH nor its donors are awash in cash these days.
Perhaps the station's already-posted fundraising pitch will whip up the necessary cash. But if it doesn't...then what?
