Guild to Globe: Mediation, please

The request was made in a memo dated May 3, which suggests that it preceded the temporary break in negotiations earlier today. I'm trying to get Globe management's response and will post it here if and when I do.

May 3, 2009

TO:        Gregory L. Thornton, Sr. Vice President/Employee Relations

FROM:    Daniel B. Totten, President/BNG

Since the parties remain in dispute as to procedural and substantive issues of apparent dispositive relevance to the survival of The Boston Globe, The Boston Newspaper Guild proposes voluntary mediation and suggests that the parties confer regarding selection of the mediator.

Please advise as to The Globe’s willingness to engage in this process.

The Guild, while reserving all legal rights, will take The Globe’s final record offers of May 3 to the bargaining unit for a vote, pursuant to The Guild’s by-laws.  The legal issues reserved include, but are not limited to, The Globe’s purported reliance upon the contract reopener language of Article II, Section 1, and The Globe’s insistence upon the elimination of the job guarantee provisions of the contract.
