"Ideas" makes the cut

In my recent piece on looming cutbacks at the Globe, I noted that the paper's "Ideas" section was reportedly set for elimination. But a Globe staffer informs me that, since I did my reporting, management has decided *not* to kill "Ideas" after all.

To my mind, the death of "Ideas" wouldn't have been a loss if (as I proposed a few weeks back) the paper made intellectual affairs a staple elsewhere in the paper. But if that wasn't a possibility--and I have no reason to think it was--the survival of "Ideas" has to be considered good news.

Also on the Globe front: Dan Kennedy reports that the elimination of the City Weekly and NorthWest sections is now a done deal.

Any idea what is going to happen to Michael Jonas's biweekly political column? He's one of the sharpest political reporters out there these days, paying attention to races no one else is covering sometimes, and I'd hate to see that coverage disappear.
