Ice Bar puts on the ritz

Remember when the Ice Bar used to be free? That was great - you could go, buy a couple drinks, have them served in various creative ways using ice (slides, etc), see a bunch of people, and then head out.

Then, apparently, organizers decided there was too much riff-raff and started to charge admission at the door. Ten bucks put a big dent in the drink-buying budget, but it was once a year and still fun, and the cover charge went to charity.

And now, the Ice Bar has gone fully elite. There will be no tickets at the door. The cheapest admission costs $15. Yeah, it still benefits charity, but the whole in-advance exclusivity thing makes it much more of yet another wintertime charity bash - and to my mind, a lot less fun. I bet anyone who starts up another ice bar with no cover charge will find the party moves there. (And hey, Joe's NY Pizza has an ice-topped bar all year round. It's upstairs.)

Portland Harbor Hotel Ice Bar January 27, 28, and 29

PORTLAND, Maine – Portland Harbor Hotel’s eagerly anticipated Annual Ice Bar, a celebration that embraces winter’s cold, opens on Thursday, January 27. This year, a limited number of tickets are available for each evening and will be sold in advance, online, through Brown Paper Tickets. Tickets will not be available at the door. Tickets are $15-$21 per person.

This annual winter tradition is also a fundraiser for three local organizations; funds are raised through the tickets purchased. Last year’s Ice Bar raised over $15,000 for charities, the goal is to exceed that this year.

This year’s Ice Bar will feature two martini bars, pouring specialty cocktails featuring Swedish Rokk Vodka. Shipyard Brewery’s popular beers will also be available at an outdoor Ice Bar, and indoors is a full bar.

The Ice Bar is carved outside in the hotel’s courtyard. Indoors, attendees will enjoy music provided by a DJ and food provided by Front Room, Grill Room and Corner Room, DennyMike’s ‘Cue Stuff and Havana South.

The Ice Bar is open from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day. Sponsors of the Ice Bar include Rokk Vodka, Shipyard Brewery, Havana South, Front Room, Corner Room and Grill Room and DennyMike’s ‘Cue Stuff.

Visit, or call 207-775-9090 for more information about the Ice Bar event.
