Next 5 in the 50 Things to Eat series (guest author)
"Nothing in this installment will be
less than 500 calories. Just saying. But hey, Maine's beach season's
almost over anyway, right?" So says Phoenix intern Andrew Steinbeiser, whose picks for good summer eating can be found below. (Not that my own recommendations have been any waist-friendlier...)
- Sweet Corn gelato at the Gelato Fiasco
on 74 Maine St. in Brunswick. Is it dessert or dinner? Be economic and
make it both. Either way, you can finally enjoy fresh Maine corn without
12 yards of dental floss.
- "Truffled" lobster "mac and cheese"
at five fifty-five on 555 Congress St. (Duh). Remember having hot dogs
cut up in your Kraft Macaroni and Cheese? Yeah, it's kinda like that.
Only a lot more expensive. And better-tasting.
- Thick-sliced cinnamon-raisin toast with butter,
courtesy of Arabica Coffee at 2 Free St., Portland. Hearty, crispy and oh so buttery,
it's the only place where getting the heel end of the loaf is a good
thing.
- Endless Garlic Knots served with every
meal at the Great Impasta on 42 Maine St. in Brunswick. There's probably
more calories in one oil drenched, garlic coated bread knot than your
entire plate of linguine. Like that's going to stop you. Get outdoor
seating for a conservative, yet pleasing view of the Androscoggin River.
He only gave me four, so allow me to add:
- A hot dog at a Sea Dogs game. Throw in a beer and a Sea Biscuit and it'll hit that 500-calorie mark, no problem.
